Mark Twain once said, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.” And while there’s some truth to that, flinging the following 10 worst skincare habits out the window might not be such a bad idea:
1. An obvious choice but one harder to drop is smoking. Wrinkled, damaged skin, especially around and on the hands and face, is hardly something you will think was worth the pack or more a day habit.
2. Junk food and poor diet are both cause for concern in caring for your skin. Drinking deprives the body of essential vitamins and minerals, and food high in sugar and fat can cause pimples and oily skin.
3. Speaking of acne, popping pimples is another habit damaging to skin. It’s tempting to think you’ll pop it just right but what you are actually doing is spreading bacteria into other areas of your skin. If you can’t resist, use a napkin. Otherwise, find an acne cleanser that works for you and use it before and after bed.
4. An increasingly problematic habit, especially in the States, is excessive tanning. That burnt wrinkly skin look isn’t going to earn you many admirers, so wear sunscreen if you know you are going out.
5. Not showering after every intense workout will lead to plenty of skin problems because you are allowing sweat, an otherwise good thing, to dry and cause damage.
6. Not getting enough sleep means you are depriving your body of the time it needs to reenergize and replenish itself. The more obvious result will be an ugly pair of puffy, dark-circled eyes made complete by wrinkles. Why look older than you have to? Set a sleep schedule and stick to it.
7. Continuing to use unclean makeup brushes is bad for a number of reasons, one of them being clogged pores. Those clogged pores can lead to further infection. All it takes to break this bad habit is to wash your brushes once or twice a month with shampoo.
8. Leaving makeup on your face before going to bed is a lazy enough habit but one easy to fall into. By not removing your makeup you are making your skin susceptible to some serious breakouts, not to mention eye irritations.
9. Overusing product can be easy to justify in our minds. If applying once or twice a day is good for my skin, then applying three times is great for my skin, right? Wrong. Those who develop these products list directions for a reason. If your favorite product says to use it once daily, then that is precisely what you should do.
10. Washing your face with soap is one of the more tempting bad habits as it is such a convenient one, but soap will leave your skin dry. Investing in a facial cleanser is a commitment worth making for healthier looking skin.
