Chiropractic care often goes far beyond just reversing back and joint pain; many times, chiropractors work toward total wellness, aiming for changes that promote longevity and help slow the aging process. To get a better idea of how this process works, we met with chiropractor and integrative medicine specialist Dr. Daveid Marquis. Read on for his tips on "big-picture" changes that will help turn back the clock.

Younger.com: Let's start with the basics -- what can a patient expect from a visit to the chiropractor and what services do you provide for those in search of products and services for looking younger?

Dr. Marquis: Anyone visiting my office can expect to be evaluated thoroughly, in a few different ways. We start with a comprehensive health history, examination, lab work as may be needed and then implement a plan to recapture the different areas of health that they have lost.

Younger.com: What are some less common services that you recommend patients should be on the lookout for?

Dr. Marquis: Many chiropractors do not offer access to that specialty testing or to a traditional lab, which in my opinion is unfortunate because the insight these tests give us is really foundational to a reliable treatment plan. A few other treatments that many patients should be looking for:

• Class IV laser therapies for repairing damaged joints, scars, nail fungus, and most areas of pain regardless of cause.

• Turbo sonic therapy, which is sound wave therapy for restoring circulation, muscle tone, nerve transmission, and bone building. This treatment is a very popular choice among our patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia. We have seen up to 11% increases in bone density studies with patients using this treatment 3 days a week for 3 months.

• Direct access to all the specialty nutritional products an individual may need to get back on the path to restoring their health and youth.

Younger.com: What personal tips do you have for looking younger?

Dr. Marquis: Good health is foundational to looking younger, so at my practice I have each of my patients go through that in-depth assessment to identify where their systems are not functioning properly, then develop a plan for the changes they need to make to get back on track. That whole process is really the best way to maintain a younger look.

Aside from that, I would add to control your worry, stress, and anger. These three emotions can eat up and age a person faster than any of us would like to believe.

Make time to be active and enjoy life.

Younger.com: As a chiropractor, what insights have you gained into anti-aging, that perhaps most people don't know?

Dr. Marquis: Health and wellness – which ultimately is what makes us feel, look, and act younger – is not something we can have applied to us. In other words, there are no magic silver bullets. We have the capacity to achieve optimal health within us; we simply need to remove the obstacles.

This often requires a bit of research and learning about how our chosen external life (job, diet, relationships, etc.) has affected our internal life (mental wellness, energy, physical wellbeing, etc.) Once we have found where our roadblocks are, removing them can be a multifactorial process.

Usually there is a structural component that a chiropractor is in a unique position to help alleviate, but this is only part of the larger process. After the roadblocks are gone, our body is then capable of accomplishing a great deal itself; it only needs to be capable to receive and utilize all the things we desperately wanted to work all along.
