From fine lines to deep facial folds, aging skin can be a challenge to improve. For inside tips on how to reverse facial aging signs at the source, we turned to physician and laser skin care expert Dr. Grace Kim-Abroms. Read on for her tips on how to slow down skin aging and target the most problematic lines and wrinkles effectively:

Younger.com: At your treatment center you help patients with a range of skin types and needs, but what tips can you offer for younger-looking skin that will work for anyone?

Dr. Kim-Abroms: As you age, sun damage from years ago will start to creep to the surface, so regardless of your age or skin type, the most important advice I can offer is to prevent that damage from worsening:

• Stay out of the sun and away from tanning salons

• Apply both antioxidants and sunscreen to your skin

• Avoid the sun during peak sun hours (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.), and wear a hat and sun-protective clothing as much as possible

Skin care requires ongoing maintenance. However, since we live in an era of multiple options for reversing the signs of aging skin, you can age very "gracefully" with the help of appropriate skin care and treatments like injectable fillers.

Younger.com: Fine lines can be particularly difficult to correct; what steps do you usually recommend?

Dr. Kim-Abroms: Usually I recommend a dual treatment, using BOTOX® Cosmetic or DYSPORT® as well as a dermal filler.

Fine lines are created when we lose elasticity to our skin but continue to create dynamic facial expressions. Facial expressions create dynamic wrinkles, which worsen with dynamic facial expression, while static wrinkles result from tissue deterioration and appear even when our faces are at rest. Static wrinkles can appear as either "fine lines" or "deep creases," but minimizing expression by using BOTOX will certainly help with both fine and sometimes deep lines.

I often recommend fillers such as JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel, Restylane®, or RADIESSE® wrinkle filler alone or in conjunction with BOTOX to fill in the creases, mostly for deeper lines like nasolabial folds (nose-to-mouth creases).

Younger.com: What important secrets can you reveal for looking younger?

Dr. Kim-Abroms: Skin develops an "aged" look because three different processes; these are the three dreaded D's of aging skin:

• Deterioration (the loss of elasticity and collagen)

• Descent (the effect of gravity)

• Deflation (the loss of volume in the face)

Many women make the mistake of addressing just one or two of these problems without dealing with the third, and when that happens the results tend to look less natural and, of course, much less thorough.

I will often recommend a combination of BOTOX, injectable fillers, and skin care because these treatments will reverse these signs of aging without requiring you to go under the knife or undergo the long recovery times you would expect from plastic surgery.
