The terms mini and micro seem to be popping up more and more frequently in front of the names of traditional plastic surgeries. But what do these terms mean? An article by James Wells, MD, FACS on Consumer Guide to Plastic Surgery explains the confusing terminology.

While mini and micro may imply easier, less complicated, and less demanding procedures, this isn't necessarily the case. A mini or micro procedure treats a smaller flaw, with a smaller incision. A mini-facelift treats a smaller facial imperfection with smaller incisions than a traditional facelift, and can also be a "touchup" procedure after a traditional facelift.

Mini procedures don't last as long as full procedures, but may be good for those just beginning to show signs of aging, or those who have already had a full procedure, and just need a slight tweaking. For the most part, a mini facelift lasts for 5 years, while a full facelift lasts up to 15. Some patients may choose to undergo a mini procedure every several years, while others may opt to have a mini procedure as a second or third surgery.

Baby boomers are often the best candidates for a mini facelift. Oftentimes the procedure will include not only a mini-facelift, with smaller incisions, stitching and downtime, but will also be followed by regular facial filler treatments to fill in sunken cheeks and hollows under the eyes.

The micro necklift is quickly becoming a popular procedure with those facing a "turkey waddle." Rather than a full necklift, a skilled doctor can perform a direct excision of excessive neck muscle or skin through a small incision under the chin and at the back of the neck.

Mini and micro procedures can be performed in conjunction with other procedures as well, and cost less than their full on counterparts because they require less time in surgery, a smaller incision, and less invasiveness.

Other popular mini and micro procedures include micro lipo, sometimes referred to as tumescent liposuction. Many plastic surgeons offer this technique, which has less recovery time and pain. A mini tummy tuck is much less invasive than a full tummy tuck, as there is no need to remove the belly button, rather it can be left in place or repositioned. A mini tummy tuck is ideal for those with a very full lower belly area. The mini tuck requires only one to two hours in surgery as it requires less muscle repair and skin removal than its traditional counterpart.
