When it comes to anti aging, prevention is key. And when it comes to prevention, sunscreen is often at the top of the list must-haves. But until recently sunscreen hadn't made many advances in the anti aging arena. Luckily leading skin care companies have fairly recently introduced sunscreen products that work to defend against the aging effects of short UVA rays as well as longer UVB rays.
"The best anti-aging product on the market is sunscreen," says Dr. Howard Sobel, a top New York dermatologist and DDF founder. "No new discovery or 'magic ingredient' will ever be more effective at preventing wrinkles and age spots than a sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater."
Traditional sunscreen technology blocked only UVB rays, but the new technologies also block against UVA rays.

Helioplex, a new technology that makes current sunscreen ingredients more effective was introduced by Neutrogena to stabilize ingredients avobenzone and oxybenzone, which are found in traditional sunscreens.
Mexoryl SX (ecamsule), a UVA-blocking sunscreen developed by L’Oreal can be found in L'Oreal sunscreens as well as other brands.
"They have been available in Europe for some time now, and there is no question they work -- and from an anti aging standpoint, they can be your best friend," says David Goldberg, MD, director of Skin Laser and Surgery Specialists of New York and New Jersey and clinical professor of dermatology at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
As an added benefit, not only do the sunscreens offer anti aging protection, they offer longer lasting protection, so you don't need to constantly reapply. More recently they have been combined with other anti aging ingredients, like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, glycolic acid, peptides and different enzymes, making them the perfect tools in the fight against aging skin.
